Orthodontics
is not just for children! There are many reasons for adult orthodontic
treatment. Some adults had problems as a child, but they are only now
having them corrected. Other adults who had treatment in childhood may
need additional treatment. The loss of a tooth can cause the remaining
teeth to shift, requiring orthodontics in preparation for implants or
bridgework. Orthodontics can help patients undergoing periodontal (gum)
treatment. Orthodontic treatment may also be indicated for patients with
temporomandibular joint (jaw joint) problems. Orthodontics in conjunction
with orthognathic surgery, which involves moving the jaw bones surgically,
can make dramatic improvements in dental function and facial appearance.
When considering adult orthodontic
treatment, the patient's age is relatively unimportant. Most problems
can be corrected in 18 to 30 months.
